Standing in front of any camera is terrifying teritory for me. I never know quite what to do. I have learned recently though that the best thing one can do is just smile and get it over and done with.
I learned this a couple of weeks after the last bank ball I went to. I had started to panic a few hours before it about all the cameras and the embarrassing pictures of me cringing that would be doing the rounds for weeks after.
I picked up the paper and there on the social pages was crap Australian comedian, Vince Sorrenti. Mouth open as wide as possible with his head thrown back and I thought "wow, stupid picture of him but he looks happy and ovrall sort of ok. That is what I will do".
It was a conscious decision after that, every photo taken I would appear mid laugh. My head thrown back and mouth open as wide as I could make it. I would be the highlight of everyones photos. Looking like they just told me the funniest joke I had ever heard in my life.
Needless to say the night game and went in a blur of alcohol and all I had to show for it was dozens of people saying to me "why do all the photos look like you are trying to swallow the person next to you whole?" or "what the hell Jason, is like you can dislocate your jaw, that is one big mouth".
So now when cameras come along it is just time to smile like a moron and look just a stupid as I feel. Nothing can be done for those of us who dont photograph well although we can start beating those who do with iron rods and bring them back to the field.
Keep Smiling
Jason
