I learned a valuable lesson last night. When people are giving away free tickets to the opening night of a new show then there is a reason they are free.
Last night Heidi and I went and watched "Eureka, the musical". For those not versed in Australian History which would be plenty of you, The Eureka Stokade was essentially the beginning of the union movement in Australia when the miners back in the 1850s (correct me if I am wrong people) stood up to unjust treatment from the British and fought back. People died and in the end the workers made their point.
Not really the sort of thing a musical would usually be based on though. Next I cant decide on wether to see "Saddamn, a musical journey" or "9/11, a musical tribute".
So to try and turn this into something that would make good musical fodder they introduced a couple of love stories, a good hearted prostitute showgirl and an aboriginal story teller.
I could only make out 6 different songs although they changed certain words in the songs and sang them over and over again with a particular focus of one of those love interests getting married "All in White" which came up in about 6 of the variations. Pretty good effort to make 6 songs last for three hours.
It all wound up with the love interests finding each other and the good hearted prostitute finding herself. The aboriginal storyteller turned up a few times but really served no purpose whatsoever which is great, meaning she fit in well with the rest of the cast.
The strangest bit at the end was when one of the love interests just died. No reason for his death, they were hugging and he just dropped dead. Still, could have happened two hours earlier to the whole cast and made me a whole lot happier.
For those curious, the star of the show on the posters was one Barry Crocker (slang in Australia for something really bad, rhyming slang for having a shocker. The production was definately a Barry Crocker), he is also more famous for being the man who sang the Neighbours theme song first time round.
Anyhow. That was my experience!!
Keep Smiling
Jason
